At the end of May 2017, we decided to go to Turkey for 3 months to avoid Cape Town winter. And it was awesome being in Oludeniz again. After loads of troubles in 2016, tourism was back to normal again.
I was busy with tandem paragliding every day. Unlike Cape Town, conditions were flyable every single day. The mountain we fly from called Babadag and its summit is 1969mt. It offers 4 different take off sites and we choose the take off site according to wind and cloud conditions.
The trip was very productive for us. We managed to find time to design a new Gopro mounting system so we can take some awesome pictures and videos without a selfie stick. Check out the result 🙂
This was my first time paragliding ever, and I loved it. I’ve attempted to do abseiling and zip-lining before, but never got myself to step over the edge. Paragliding turned out to be a much different experience, instead of stepping over an edge, you run for some steps and suddenly you fly.
Due to my issues with heights, I was pretty nervous at the start, but Kai and David used some humor to calm me down and we got on with it pretty quickly so I had no time for doubts. As mentioned above, I was in the air before I knew it and I enjoyed every second of it. The feeling of flying is amazing and the view of Cape Town was brilliant. The landing was great, expect for me regretting that it was over. Luckily, I have an SD card full of great pics to remind me of this great experience.
If you’re visiting Cape Town or a local like me, you simply must try paragliding. Cape Town Tandem Paragliding comes highly recommended. The guys are playful and the “vibe” really nice.
I flew with Kay Dura (the Turkish instructor) and I personally recommend him. With more than 20 years experience, he’s got a gift to find those thermal updrafts. We we’re airborne for 20-25 minutes.
I will definitely do this again – and I will insist on Kay.
On the 1st of April my boyfriend Warren had booked for us to go paragliding as a “gift from his company,” little did I know that this was all a set up for him to propose.
Now I could go on about the professionalism of Skywings, the way that they make every moment fun and relaxed and the focus they place on safety but something that set them apart that day was the role they played in the proposal. Its not every day that you find a company that will go out of their way to help you the way they did for my now fiancé. Jody had helped with the planning process for months before. On the day, Kai and David made sure everything ran smoothly so that Warren could get down before I took flight, without me even getting a hint of suspicion. Then it was time for my flight.
When I was in the air, it was just the most wonderful feeling, flying above the crowds, looking out to the beautiful ocean, seeing the way that the mountains flow into the city buildings. It was serene and freeing. I of course got lost in this moment and David, realising I hadn’t seen the proposal written on the promenade, drew my attention to the ground. David assured me it was really for me, despite my name being written in BOLD letters and that it was in fact not an April fool’s joke all the while recording the entire reaction. With much excitement we flew in, Warren went down on one knee and proposed and I said YES. Everything about the entire experience was perfect!
I want to, from the bottom of my heart, thank Jody, Kai and David for playing such a special role in an important day in our lives. Your willingness to help, the effort you made for us and the fun we had on the flight as well as on the ground will always hold a special place in my heart. Our first flight will always signify the start of our life adventure together. Thank you Skywings!
I checked out how some other paragliding companies just take the guys straight down as the crow flies to get it over and done with. I went with Kai from Skywings and he made the trip so much more worthwhile, getting lift at certain spots to go higher and higher and then finally only going down with some tight turning in between.. This lasted about double as long as the other guys that went down with different companies. Kai knows his stuff and got heaps of experience to get the most out of your trip.. By all means go with Skywings. Highly recommended!
